We hit the trail on one of the last days of 2020. It was a walk near our house that we take nearly every day, where the dogs bury their noses in the smells of the trails. Only on this day there was snowfall.
I could see the many animal tracks – deer, rabbits and other small animals (thankfully no bears!). It reminded me that today I could “see” what my dogs know is already there, what surrounds us every single day.
It reminded me of hope and love, things that surround us even when we can’t always see them. They are always there. Always encompassing us. Acts of love and kindness – big and small – envelope us. You don’t always notice them, but they are always there.
The past year was difficult for many. But even so, if we paid enough attention, acts of kindness and love surrounded us. We saw it in doctors, nurses, EMTs, teachers, grocery store clerks, delivery personnel and so many others. We saw it in neighbors who checked in on each other or who ran errands for someone who was shut in. We saw it on Zoom calls. Even the mere act of wearing a mask showed compassion for keeping those around us – especially the elderly and those with compromised immune systems – safe and healthy.
I wish all of you a healthy and happy 2021. And I wish for you a “snowfall,” a moment when you are clearly able to see the love and hope that surrounds each one of you.
